First on the list was Pacific Grove, my first serious race after my long injury break. I had a rough swim and did not make the pack. Not all that surprising given the lack of training, but not making the pack usually sums up the day at Pacific Grove. This year was no different, Ethan Brown, Chris Tremonte, and myself tried to make up some time on the bike, but were unable to gain any time. As a result, there wasn't much to run for at the end. I finished 14th quite a ways off the leaders.

Next on the list was Tinley's in my old stomping grounds of SLO town. I had about as bad of a swim (if not worse) than at Pac Grove, so I had my work cut out for me. On the bike I actually felt strong and considering I was on a road bike (since I had never been on my TT bike before this year, I opted to stick with the good old road setup that I am familiar with) I actually had a good bike leg. On the run, I was pushed by Ryan Bickerstaff and we made up some ground and finished in 8th place. A top 10 is always a solid result and made me optimistic for the last races of the year.

After another month of solid training, I started to feel pretty good again for the first time in over a year and a half. It's been a frustrating two years with all the injuries and health problems. My swim was definitely better than at the two previous races and we were only down about 15 seconds to the main pack. Unfortunately, my tire popped during the first lap of the bike right after the wheel stop. I tried to ride carefully on my rim and eventually made it to the pitstop but by the time I made it there and swaped the wheel the front group was already on my tail. Hence, that was the end of that. Too bad, I actually felt good and was looking forward to a fast all-out 10km run. It's my first flat in over 8 years, it wasn't meant to be I guess. What a bummer to finish up the season that never really started. Oh well, time to focus on finishing up grad school now. Final exams are just around the corner.
