Review 2009, Bay Area, CA (USA)
31.12.2009

You might have been wondering what ever happened to me, so here is a long overdue review of 2009.

For the first part of the year, I was focusing on finishing up my MBA at Santa Clara. At the same time I was dedicating a lot of my time trying to build up Skinfit USA. I was also serving as the head coach of the Stanford Triathlon Team.

All these commitments meant that my own triathlon career was put on hold. I was still exercising but I had to set other priorities in life. As much as I would have liked to continue to race as a professional, it was time to hang up the racing flats. Being involved in the triathlon community through coaching and Skinfit gave me a chance to say goodbye slowly instead of just announcing my retirement from one day to the next. It was a healthy and good process for me as I was able to step away from racing at the highest level with little to no regrets. The years from 2005-2008 were not always easy as I was dealing with a lot of injuries and was never able to reach my former level again. Hence, I am glad that I realized when it was time to hang them up instead of chasing a dream that wasn't really there anymore. My time in the Bay Area gave me the opportunity to do just that, come to terms with a natural progression and step away while it was still fun.

From an athletic perspective, I kept running a bit and finished the Boston and New York City Marathons in the same year, both under 3:00 hours. I was definitely not running as fast as I once had been, but the memories while training and traveling with some of my best friends will last for a lifetime. I tried to stay away from the water as much as possible and the one time I did hop in the water at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center, I broke a finger playing water polo. It was definitely a sign to stay away from chlorinated water for a while. My riding was also kept to a minimum and the weekly group rides became even fewer and further in between than in recent years. However, it was still fun to see every one out there occasionally.

Of course, trying to race crossed my mind a few times, especially since the last triathlon of my career ended with my first flat tire in my career. I guess some things are just meant to be. All in all, it was a good and important year. A lot of things have changed, but the time was right. I am now officially a retired pro triathlete and looking forward to the next stage of my life.

Tri my best!
